Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) founded 1948 as the East African Institute of Social Research (EAISR)

The Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) was established in 1948 as the former East African Institute of Social Research (EAISR). Its establishment however was not without controversy. On the national scene, some Ugandans at the time were against the creation an East African federation and the proposed EAISR name was not palatable.

At institutional level, there had to be a delicate balance between creating a semi-independent institute solely focused on research and ensuring that the eventual unit would not overshadow the regional prestige of Makerere University. The institute adopted its current name on 1st July 1970 when Makerere University was inaugurated as the National University of Uganda.

Some of MISR's former Directors include Prof. Ali A. Mazrui (1968) and the former Prime Minister and first non-Head of State Chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Apolo Robin Nsibambi (1992-96).
