His Highness Crown Prince Abdulla of Zanzibar made is first official visit to Makerere in May 1948 during which he officially opened the University Mosque.
He was welcomed by the then Principal of Makerere College (1947-1949) Dr. William D. Lamont and a host of students and staff. The University Mosque was built and completed in 1948 from funds subscribed partly by Makerere College and partly by the Government of Zanzibar.
