The Department of Law was established under the School of Social Sciences at Makerere University College in June 1968. At the time, Prof. Yusuf Kironde Lule was the Principal of Makerere University College and Prof. Ali A. Mazrui was the Dean, School of Social Sciences.

Prof Joseph Kakooza, who had just returned the previous year as the first Ugandan to attend Harvard Law School was the first Head of Department and later the first Dean of Law when the Department became the School of Law on 1st July 1970.

The first graduating Bachelor of Laws Class (1968-71) was made up of 17 men and 6 women.
