The Faculty of Technology was established in 1969 but it fully opened its doors in July 1970; at the beginning of the 1970/71 academic year, with an intake of 26 students in the three traditional areas of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. This was at a time when the Ugandan Government realised that industries needed more technical manpower than what was being produced, mainly from the University of Nairobi and abroad then.
The four-year syllabus for the B.Sc courses designed by the Yugoslav Advisory team of Professors headed by Prof. Z. Vladislavjevic. The first phase of the Faculty's building programme was expected to be completed above the four-storeyed Mechanical Engineering block. On completion, it was hoped that the building would house the entire faculty, until the two smaller Civil and Electrical engineering blocks were completed.
On 14th August 2009, a new extension block, providing an additional 6000 square metres of space was lauched by the Deputy Norwegian Ambassador to Uganda H.E Gjermund Sæther and then Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Lilian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza. The Norwegian Government provided USD 2,100,000 toward the construction of this building and Makerere University contributed USD 600,000 to cater for the space to be occupied by DICTS.
