U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg visited Makerere University on 4th February 2011 and delivered a Public Lecture on U.S. foreign policy in Africa to a full audience of Staff and Students at the Food Science and Technology Conference Hall.

His visit to Makerere was part of a Ugandan visit from 3rd - 4th February 2012, and a broader regional trip to Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Ghana, and Ethiopia. He was met on arrival by the Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba and accompanied by Ambassador Mary Carlin Yates, Africa Senior Director, National Security Council, Ambassador Johnnie Carson, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Virginia Blaser, Charge d'Affaires, A.I. US Mission Uganda, among other officials.
