The Kiira Electric Vehicle, Uganda's first electric car developed by the Staff and Students of the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) was officially launched by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 24th November 2011.
Code-named "Kiira" after the River Nile's traditional name, the vehicle was developed with funding and support from the Presidential Initiative for Science and Technology. The Presidential Initiative has also supported the establishment of a Centre for Research in Transportation Technologies (CRTT), whose future plans include the development of an electric bus by mid-2013.
The President then took his maiden trip in the Kiira EV to the School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio-engineering, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), where he launched two lines of production at Food Technology and Business Incubation Centre (FTBIC).
