Safe Male Circumcision (SMC) services were officially launched at the Makerere University Hospital by the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda H.E. Scott DeLisi on 11th December 2012. Offered under the Makerere University Hospital-Makerere University Joint AIDS Programme (MJAP) partnership, SMC is funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), with technical support from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The services which initially attracted only a handful of paticipants per day now serve over 60 males daily. The Ambassador however advised the circumcised males to refrain from irresponsible sexual behaviour, clarifying that SMC was not a silver bullet to HIV prevention. The Vice Chancellor was represented by Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe, The Dean of Students.
Also present at the launch were Dr. Jane Bosa-Director University Health Services, Dr. Wuhib Tadesse-CDC Uganda Country Director, Dr. Jennifer Namusobya-MJAP Executive Director, Prof. Nelson Sewankambo-Principal College of Health Sciences (CHS) & MJAP Board Chairman, Dr. Alex Ariyo-AIDS Control Programme (ACP) Ministry of Health, Dr. Musa Bungudu-UNAIDS Country Coordinator, as well as other Members of the MJAP Board and United States Government employees in uganda.
