On 6th March 2013, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University together with the Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Norway to Uganda hosted distinguished guests to celebrate the decades of cooperation between Makerere University and the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Norway.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor John Ddumba-Ssentamu applauded the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Norway and the people of Norway for their special love and support to Makerere, and thus being a key player in the transformation of the University.
Addressing the congregation, The Norwegian Ambassador, His Excellency Thorbjørn Gaustadsæther said that he was pleased to commemorate more than 50 years of partnership between Uganda and the Royal Kingdom of Norway.
The Chief Guest, The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi launched a new initiative, the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED) estimated to be worth NOK 150million, approximately USD 26million, (including NORAD's Master programme for Energy and Petroleum).
The Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor George Mondo Kagonyera also appreciated the people of Norway for supporting Makerere University. He commended the Norwegian people, for scoring highly in their human capacity building programmes and advised the congregation to emulate the good practices of Norwegians, such as ensuring proper utilisation and accountability for resources, and preservation of the environment.
