At the climax of year-long celebrations marking 90 Years of Existence of Makerere University held on 3rd August 2013, The Prime Minister of The Republic of Uganda Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi laid a foundation stone for the Makerere University Students’ Centre; the gist of the Grand Finale.
The two-phase project is expected to cost USD 30million with Phase 1 set to cost USD 15million, with a total built-up area of 58,000sq.metres. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba- Ssentamu, explained that the Students’ Centre will be a one-stop information centre for students, complete with meeting rooms, commercial spaces for rent, indoor recreational facilities and a multi-purpose auditorium. He called unto all stakeholders, including the alumni to support this cause.
H.E. Dr. Mwai Kibaki, former President of The Republic of Kenya and an Honorary Doctor of Laws of Makerere University recipient spoke as a distinguished alumni at the Grand Finale. H.E. Kibaki challenged the younger generation of Makerereans to to carry on from where their older compatriots had left off by making their contribution through breaking new ground in research.
H.E Dr. Mwai Kibaki was thereafter presented with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Medal award of the Great Lakes Students’ Union by the Union's Patron Gen. Elly Tumwine. This award was in recognition of his outstanding political, social and economic achievements, and the promotion of good governance in the region.
The year-long celebrations held under the theme “Leadership towards Africa’s transformation in the 21st century,” were attended by among other dignitaries the Education and Sports Minister, Hon. Jessica Alupo, State Minister for Higher Education Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, The Chancellor Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, The Chairperson Council Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, Development Partners, Members of Parliament, The Makerere Anthem Composer Mr. Grace Wilson Mutekanga Igaga, University Staff and Students, and Makerere Alumni.
