Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother officially visited Makerere College on 20th February 1959, and presided over the opening the New Library Building as well as the 1959 Graduation Ceremony.
Prior to this in 1949, Makerere College had become affiliated to the University of London and in 1955, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother had been elected Chancellor of the University of London, a position she held for 25 years. Looking resplendent in the robes of Chancellor the University of London, the Queen Mother proceeded to confer degrees and doctorates on the days graduands, including Cyril Ehrlich, Senior Lecturer in Economics and Calvin Rose, Lecturer in Physics.
